    Give it Up...

Lent, that notorious season where Protestants don't understand the ashes on Catholic's foreheads and Filet 'O Fish sales skyrocket at McDonald's on Fridays.

An interesting time if of the year and a time we too easily ignore.

My challenge this year will to not just give something up, but replace it with a discipline of Christ.  Just giving something up, while it may be hard, doesn't do much to draw us closer to Christ.  It may, in some minuscule way, remind me of the suffering of Christ. But seriously, does my not watching TV for a month compare in any way to what Christ suffered for me?  Absolutely not.

So since it can't compare, at least make it worth something I can gain and grow in.  Christ wants us to remember his suffering but that's not the point of his ministry or message.  It's to bring about the kingdom of God and be love to each other.  So as I drop the TV this Lent season, [except for the Office and Battlestar Galactica] and maybe pop and other junk food too, what will I add in order to draw closer to my Savior?

    How about...

    Acutely praying daily with Dawn.
Reading a gospel a week until Easter.

Maybe something else will come along too!

Then what I have lost at Lent is actually allowed me to gain in my relationship with Dawn and Christ!

    Convergence

How does life converge like this?

Months ago I planned a retreat at Geneva for our middle school group to talk about sexuality, purity and responsibility.  Good retreat, great topic and usually a lot of fun. People say I'm crazy for bringing up the subject of sex with middle schoolers, but they so desperately need to hear God's truth about it instead of all the garbage they are being told by everyone else.  Plus getting away with the students is usually a blast!

But then after booking the retreat comes along a marriage retreat with our church that Dawn and I really want to go to.  And of course it happens on the same weekend.

And low and behold there is one of our middle school dances tonight at the Anchor.

Am I a scheduling genius or what?

So, my schedule this weekend is marriage retreat overnight tonight until 11 am tomorrow with Dawn, then go directly to our middle school sexuality retreat out at Geneva and spend the night with the students until noon on Sunday.  They I still have to plan high school youth group for Sunday night.

I hope I can keep the two similar but very different topics separate in as I speak to the students.  That could be interesting. It's going to be a very strange weekend yet somehow I'm looking forward to it!
